Frank L. Cole knows a thing or two about storytelling. He has thirteen books available, including The Die of Destiny, the first in the Champion’s Quest series from Shadow Mountain Publishing. And his highly-acclaimed Potion Masters series immerses young readers into the mysterious world of potion making. Sharing his knowledge with children is at the forefront of his career. The middle-grade author has visited more than 250 schools nationwide where he delivered his signature message: With a good imagination you can solve any problems you ever come up against in life. An enthusiastic advocate of reading, Cole says he'll believe any creepy story you tell him, especially ones involving ghosts or Big Foot. When he’s not reading or writing, you might catch him on Instagram @franklcolewrites, sharing hilarious bookish reels about his writing adventures.

I chatted with Frank and asked eleven questions that will give you an inside look at the author behind the books.

1. If you could play a game of Champion’s Quest, who would you want to play with?

I love playing a Druid in my Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, so I think I would gravitate toward the Harvester role. Being able to control plants and do nature-type spells would be pretty epic!

2. Are you a pantser or plotter?

I’m a natural pantser forced to write as a plotter. I think my best writing happens when I have no clue what’s going on in my story and I discover it along with my characters, but when you write under contract, you kind of have to provide your publisher with a fairly detailed outline.

3. What is your writing process like?

My writing process is all over the place. I only get a couple days a week to sit down and work on my current manuscript, which means I’m usually very panicked and scatterbrained the whole time. I need complete silence, no upcoming appointments during the day, and I need to be warm, so thick, wooly socks are a must.

4. What’s the last tv show you binged watched?

Stranger Things season 4. So good!

5. What do you like best about school author visits?

As a middle grade author, it gets tricky marketing to my target audience. There are a ton of great books available, so I love it when an audience suddenly realizes, from something I’ve shared about my stories, they may want to try out my book.

6. Do you believe in ghosts?

Yeah, I’m pretty much willing to believe just about anything paranormal-ish.

7. Do you believe in Big Foot?

Of course! Why not? 😊 I believe in dragons too. I mean, we had pterodactyls at one time on the earth. A dragon is not that hard to believe, right?

8. What is the best room in your house for writing?

My office. I can’t write anywhere else, unfortunately.

9. Out of all the books you’ve written, which is your favorite?

That’s a tough one! It’s probably a tie between Potion Masters 2 – The Transparency Tonic, and Champion’s Quest 2 – The Questmaster’s Trap. Both were super fun to write, and they have some of my all-time favorite scenes.

10. What’s the hardest part about being a writer?

Staying motivated when self-doubt creeps in and takes hold. Imposter Syndrome is such a real thing and it can destroy my writing motivation.

11. What are you working on now?

I have a book due to my publisher in a couple of months called The Last Library and I have a book on submission right now with my agent called Vigilante Sasquatch.

Journey to Zentobia Five Star Reviews!

"What an enchanting, magical adventure! I had so much fun!
I absolutely loved this. I loved the sibling relationship b/n Maggie & Peter, & it made me miss my own brother. Lol I also loved the idea of the portal being in the end of a rainbow! So creative. The world building was amazing, & I felt like I was flying around w/them in Zentobia in my own flying shoes! Very atmospheric! I LOVE Zentobia-the rainbow, the waterfalls, the shoes, the talking animals, & so much more all sound so amazing! The story flowed so nicely, & there was always something happening, & high stakes as well-which make for a fast-paced read. Themes of friendship, family, never giving up, & doing what’s right. Highly recommend! Such a fun, exciting read. That ending has me needing a book 2 now! Loved it & want more. Can’t wait to see what happens-I’m assuming there will be a book 2🤞🏻Absolutely beautiful cover by Kim Dingwall as well!

Stacy D'Alessandro

Routine trips to Disneyland with her daughter played a role in Stacy's passion for storytelling.

Her daughter inspired the idea for Journey to Zentobia on a road trip home from one of their visits to the happiest place on Earth. They would pass a piece of paper back and forth in the car and each write part of a story. Her daughter's idea for a brother and sister to transport back in time through a rainbow portal stuck with Stacy for almost two years before she sat in front of the computer and began to write Journey to Zentobia.

Though she changed her daughter's original idea of the main characters going back in time to ending up in another world, the credit still goes to her innovative, young mind.

When she wasn’t working on this children's book, she wrote freelance stories for
newspapers and magazines. Prior to that, she worked in the public relations
industry in Las Vegas for more than 25 years.
